Centennial Square & Fountain Park
(Sights & Activities - Sightseeing)
200 Clematis StWest Palm Beach FL 33401 561-804-4900
Description:
WEST PALM BEACH. At the base of Clematis Street, just in front of the public library, this open plaza serves as a gathering place for folks frequenting WPB's revitalized downtown area. Tables and benches allow visitors to take a break from shopping, and concerts held here and at the open-air Meyer Amphitheatre (located nearby) draw music-lovers galore. Probably the most notable feature of the park is its lively fountain. A series of jets spring up from the pavement, unencumbered by a basin. As the jets wax, wane, and change pressure, children run through them, shrieking with delight. Fountain "guards" keep an eye on the merriment and ensure that everyone has a great time. Adults look on the antics with amusement and a bit of nostalgia.
Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea
(Sights & Activities - Sightseeing)
141 S County RdPalm Beach FL 33480 561-655-4554
Description:
PALM BEACH. Set amid lush lawns and towering palm trees, this Gothic-styled church was built in 1927 and is a gorgeous landmark on County Road. At the entrance portal, four statues of the saints keep watch, and Christ himself rests above. Perhaps the most beautiful architectural element, the cloister's arches are detailed with open stone tracery and enclose a calming courtyard. Beyond the garth, the Cluett Gardens (created to honor two early members of the congregation) offer an area for meditation and include water features and well-cared-for planting beds. The sanctuary itself is dim and awe-inspiring, complete with elaborate stained glass windows and intricate woodwork. Tours are provided the second and fourth Sundays of the month, following the 11am service.
Mar-a-Lago
(Sights & Activities - Sightseeing)
1100 S Ocean BlvdPalm Beach FL 33408
Description:
PALM BEACH. The one-time home of heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, Mar-a-Lago is perhaps Palm Beach's most famous residence. Now a private club owned by real estate tycoon, Donald Trump, the beautiful, Spanish-styled residence is not open for public viewing but can be glimpsed as you drive down South Ocean Boulevard. Its 100-plus rooms recreate a variety of architectural styles and are beautifully furnished with many of the home's original artifacts. The estate also boasts a 75-foot tower, its own golf course, and an underground tunnel to the shore. The melodic name is Spanish and refers to the home's grounds, which stretch from sea to lake.
Mizner Fountain and Memorial Park
(Sights & Activities - Sightseeing)
331 S County RdPalm Beach FL 33480
Description:
PALM BEACH. The elegant little plaza where this fountain rests sits in a widened area of South County Road. Guarded by tall palms, the coral-stone terrace includes both a stepped water feature and a lower reflecting pool, surrounded by clipped boxwood gardens. On the upper level, a large, circular, tiered fountain boasts finned, web-hooved horses rearing up and supporting a basin on their backs. Four urns on pedestals are set around it, and two lower ones feature fountains at their bases. Although the terrace is diminutive, it's a lovely centerpiece for this stretch of Palm Beach. The area was designed by renowned Palm Beach architect, Addison Mizner.
